On Saturday, May 18th, Parkwood enjoyed the opening of the Parkwood Farmers' Market. As early as 8:30, people were showing up to get their hands on the freshest produce found in the far Northeast. Although still early in the season, the farmers who arrived on the scene to share their bucolic bounty still brought a wide array of local and artisanal goodies to delight all comers.
Those who arrived early enough were rewarded with the first strawberries of the season from the McCann farm out of Monroeville, New Jersey although because of the recent cold spell, there weren't many to go around. However, with the temperature expected to reach into upper 80's this week, visitors to the farmers' market next Saturday can rest assured that they will be leaving with some scrumptious strawberries.
Taproot Farm had plenty of early spring vegetables to choose from. The fragrance of their green garlic probably reached Academy Road if those at the Wawa were so lucky. When passing their stand it's hard to discern if you are admiring produce or art. Either way, the taste can't be beat.
Fans of treats, breads and goodies had much to choose from as well. Wild Flour Bakery (out of Upper Holmesburg) "brought it" with a variety of cookies, cakes, flat breads, baguettes, free form loaves and more. Vegetables and Sweet Tooth indulgences? This is some kind of market!
And considering we are still in May, it's only the beginning.
